Episode 8: self care- Does is really work?
This episode introduces the idea that self care may not feel sexy, but when done on a regular basis, the results CAN be!
Just like in motorsports or many sports there is usually an on and off season. For me the season brings the most fun and play! Off season brings maintenance, less play and what I consider the more boring stuff that is necessary to have more fun when it’s GO time and the season starts back up. Off season is the learning, review, maintenance, practice, etc. Not nearly as much fun!
The same can be said for many other areas of our lives, business, finances, & health.
Starting back around 2013 I was fortunate enough to be invited to listen to an author speak. I had no idea what it was about, besides morning routines. The book being promoted was the Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod. He was hilarious and fun to listen to and I immediately read the book and started implementing. I started with the early 5am rise time and many years later embraced my body clock calls for a much different rise time. I have explored all sorts of different versions of a morning routine and came up with a self care ritual that works for me. It helps me be the best version of myself to meet the day ahead and be prepared for whatever ‘joyful surprises” meet me.
My self care steps that I engage in usually 4-5 days a week at the least have created the foundation for massive growth and abundance in my life. Many mornings I rise, I don’t “feel like” doing the steps, but I’ve been at it long enough to know how I feel is not the way to make my choices. If I skip more than 2 days (usually my weekends), by day 3 I start to feel the shift away from feeling my best physically, mentally and emotionally. This very last weekend proved this self care is not a maybe or should, IT IS a MUST! It’s amazing how quickly the fatigue, cloudy mind, pain and crappy sleep come back to remind me it is a must.
You will find you need to be flexible and curious in developing this practice. Your schedule or a sick family member can quickly distract. One key question to ask yourself- How can I still get it done, even if in a modified version? Showing up is the point! If you show up more than you don’t, your identity starts to match these new choices. This episode is packed with practical tips to get started with baby steps.
Caring for the most basic and vital components of what makes you you (mind, body, spirit), might seem less important than everything else vying for your time. This is where you choose your hard. Choose the workout or poor health, choose healthier food or poor health, choose to have the hard conversation or poor relationships, and so on.
Key components we will cover:
-3 most important focuses of self care
-Breakdown of easiest way to start- baby steps
-How to step up an existing self care routine
-How to build a new habit
-Creating a new identity that embraces self care
-How to see the most success in creating change around self care
-Why try? Are you willing to die for your loved ones? What about living for them?
I also include my own self care ritual that makes me feel the most vitality, which allows me to experience and be ready for more joy and pleasure in my life. Here’s the link to my free download of my daily ritual I call Sexy 6.
